Smear Campaign

How Vermont schools keep parents of allergic kids from going nuts

The day begins as calmly as any other this summer. Graced with blue skies outside and a break from deadlines at my desk, I decide to take my 20-month-old to Shelburne Farms for a little meeting with the moo-cows and lunch. We meet up with friends in the parking lot, and I don’t think twice when one of them, a fellow mom of a toddler, offers my daughter a cashew. “Yummy, a cashew!” I say, handing her the nut. In my mind, the only thing wrong with the scenario is that I’m not offered cashews to snack on, too.... Read more

True to her School

Work: Cara Austin, Cheerleading Coach, Rutland

It’s a far cry from idyllic green athletic fields, but the chants coming from inside are unmistakable. Tucked away in building 12M in the Howe Center — an industrial park in a gritty section of downtown Rutland — is Peak Performance All Star Cheer & Fitness, the only cheerleading gym in Vermont. That’s right: a gym devoted to practicing dance maneuvers, tumbles, call-back cheers, aerial stunts and all the other tricks cheerleaders use to keep fans focused on the game. It’s here, too, that all-stars hone their skills for state and New England cheering competitions.... Read more

Burton and Artist Mikey Welsh Team Up on New Snowboards

State of the Arts

Mention the word Burton,” and “snowboard” is bound to follow: The Vermont-based company is world-renowned and virtually synonymous with the sport. Burton has also long been notable for its cutting-edge graphics. A new line of snowboards this year proves the point. But behind the high-tech craftsmanship is a little old-school cut-and-paste.... Gotcha Covered

A Washington D.C., nonprofit directs musicians through the health-care system, note by note

Earlier this summer, the Burlington music community was rocked by news of life-threatening injuries to two of its favorite sons. In June, longtime Queen City stalwart Daryl Rabidoux was critically injured in a car accident in his adopted hometown of Providence, Rhode Island. Barely a month later, Burlington bouncer Mikey Van Gulden was struck by a taxicab while riding his bicycle home following a shift at Higher Ground.... Read more

Will WIC For Food

My love-hate relationship with a government-subsidized nutrition program

These days, plenty of Vermont families are tightening their belts and budgets, struggling to adjust to rising food and fuel prices. Mine is no exception. We’ve relied on the usual smart- shopper strategies: clipping coupons, looking for sales, buying generic brands, planting more vegetables in the garden plot.... Read more

The Other Olympics

When it comes to sport, some Burlington refugees are always game

More than a century ago, Irish immigrants regularly muddied Boston Common with their Gaelic football matches, while boxing gyms in Brooklyn and Manhattan reeked with the sweat of Italians and Jews literally fighting for their place in U.S. society.... Read more

Vermont’s only community waterfront center trains boatloads of young sailors

Imagine a stately yacht club with a wrap-around porch and a manicured lawn that slopes into Lake Champlain. Now picture the polar opposite. If that’s proving tricky, walk down to the Burlington waterfront and head north about a hundred yards, until you reach the Lake Champlain Community Sailing Center.... Read more

Tick Talk

Buggin’ out with Vermont State Entomologist Jon Turmel

When it comes to summer pests, ticks and mosquitoes beat just about everything (even overstaying house guests). The blood-sucking critters can carry the life-altering Lyme disease and the potentially fatal West Nile virus — and now they’re plaguing the Green Mountain State in historic proportions. With such worries getting under our skin, Seven Days bugged State Entomologist Jon Turmel with some questions.

Seven Days: So, are the ticks worse than ever this year? That’s what I heard.... Read more

Fat Flack

Does WALL-E feed obesity stereotypes?

As glowing reviews and booming box office returns greet the movie WALL-E, Pixar’s summer release has also inspired an unusual outpouring of debate over the animated feature’s message. Much of the story — warning: spoilers ahead — unfolds wordlessly, which perhaps abets multiple interpretations. A cautionary tale about the dangers of overconsumption, or a fable about the human need to connect?... Read more
