Gone Missing

Book Review: Island of Lost Girls by Jennifer McMahon

American pop culture is obsessed with child abduction. Watch TV on any given night and it’s hard to avoid stumbling on a drama in which a malevolent stranger snatches a little girl from her backyard or playground or schoolbus stop. (On Monday, when “CSI,” “Medium” and “Criminal Minds” are on, you could watch the scenario unfold thrice in quick succession.) Given the relative rarity of such crimes in real life, why do we fixate on them in fiction?... Read more

Scene@ Green Mountain Motorheads Car Show

Main Street, Barre, Saturday, June 7, 3 P.M.

Before exploring the Green Mountain Motorheads Car Show in Barre this weekend, I had to get myself in the right state of mind. So, I stopped at the Pit Stop Diner on Main St. for a dose of NASCAR memorabilia and a bacon cheeseburger.... Read more

Sean & Nora's Says Adios

Side Dishes: Julio's Cantina will stay open

After facing a "perfect storm of issues," John Mayfield, owner of 5-year-old Sean & Nora's in Barre, has decided to close the restaurant where he offered up "food from America's neighborhoods." "Sean & Nora's has never been a hugely successful business venture," he admits. "But it was always a labor of love." Locals considered the eatery, named for Mayfield's grandparents, a splurge for special occasions.... Read more

Waxing Enthusiastic

Art Review: Alexandria Bottinelli, Jill Herrick-Lee & Christopher Thompson. Third Floor Gallery, Studio Place Arts, Barre. Through May.

The medium of encaustic is both old and new. Some of the earliest paintings of Western civilization are encaustic funereal portraits from Hellenistic Egypt. But the technique — involving beeswax, resin and pigment — was so demanding and cumbersome that it eventually became a “lost art.” In the 20th century, however, thanks to improved technologies and commercially available mixtures, encaustic underwent a revival. Now, its popularity seems to grow each year.... Read more

Side Dishes: Leftover Food News

Last year, when Elizabeth Manriquez — co-owner of Espresso Bueno in Barre — attended the Northeast Regional Barista Competition, the competitors barely numbered in the double digits and the vibe was pretty chill. Last weekend, when she traveled to Ithaca, New York, for this year's contest, things had changed. "There were 27 competitors. I don't even know if I would really call them peers: they were a little beyond," Manriquez says.... Read more

Staying Afloat

“The Boat Show,” a thematic group exhibit in multiple media. Main Floor Gallery, Studio Place Arts, Barre. Through April 12.

Although boats and ships are essentially just vehicles to transport humans and cargo through water, they hold a special — and often metaphoric — place in our imaginations. Hence “The Boat Show,” currently at Studio Place Arts in Barre, artistically plies the maritime motif with 40 artworks by 27 artists from around Vermont and as far away as the West Coast. Aptly named curator Janet Van Fleet organized the exhibition into loosely related groups according to theme.... Read more

Ex-Con Rehabilitation Program on Chopping Block

Local Matters

VERMONT — Most of us don’t like to hear that a convicted rapist, murderer, armed robber or pedophile is being released from prison and moving back to town. But whether you believe it’s society’s job to rehabilitate dangerous criminals or just lock them up and throw away the key, most violent felons eventually walk the streets again. And the likelihood that those ex-cons will succeed in becoming safe and productive members of society is often determined by their ability to find housing, jobs and a network of friends and family that can keep them out of trouble.... Boomin' Barre

Side Dishes: Granite central gets All Fired Up, again

Newly renovated, re-opened All Fired Up Tavern in Barre is back, and "it's a totally different business," according to co-owner Ann Fiore. "A lot of people were getting take-out, and the feedback I was getting is that they loved the food, but not the atmosphere."

They've changed the restaurant's look by adding a front and a back bar, "lots of granite" and 14 plasma TVs. Plus, Fiore brought on board exec chef and co-owner... Read more
