Pump Up the Volume

Soundbites: July 3rd Party, Backwords, Paddy Reagan, The Cush

You know, I think I’ve made it more than a year without referencing that classic 1990 Christian Slater vehicle about pirate radio. And I wrote a whole feature on The Radiator? Some music journalist I am. Glad to finally get that monkey off my back.... Read more

Get Well, Daryl

Soundbites: Daryl Rabidoux, Amadis, Seth Yacovone, Neptune

Two weeks ago, longtime Burlington resident Daryl Rabidoux was seriously injured in a car accident in his adopted home state of Rhode Island. He was released from the ICU on Saturday, June 15, but is still hospitalized with a litany of injuries, including two punctured lungs, several broken ribs, a torn liver, fractured sternum and head trauma.... Summer-ize

Soundbites: Bluegrass Gospel Project, Michael Harding, Lendway, DJ Red Foxx

One of the homier joys of summer is the outdoor music series. Much like the long-running Sunday-evening concerts at Burlington’s Battery Park, they’re typically seen as the domain of community orchestras bleating big-band standards — and the occasional dated rock ’n’ roll classic or two — and evoke Rockwellian images of village greens, gazebos and happy families nestled together on picnic blankets. However, Vermonters typically prefer their slices of quaint Americana with a little edge.... Read more

Soundbites Summer Spectacular!

Soundbites: Nose Bleed Island, Akrobatik, Cherry Cassette, Mark LeGrand

Ah, the summer blockbuster! Perhaps other than oppressive heat waves and the annual Red Sox "June swoon," nothing signifies the arrival of summer quite like the flood of lightweight celluloid schlock currently occupying cineplex screens around the country. Whether an aging action star with a bullwhip, a recovering drug addict in a metal suit or four men-obsessed — but independent! — NYC socialites, the popcorn flick has become as much an unofficial indicator of summer as Memorial Day.... Jazz-Free Zone: Fines Doubled For Scatting

Soundbites: Ornette Coleman, Magic Hat Block Party, Monkey House, Dive Bars

Well, here we are, folks, smack in the middle of installment number 25 of the Burlington Discover Jazz Festival. And man, oh, man, it's pretty awesome. So in honor of the bop, be-bop, post-bop, hip-bop and not-so-hip-bop currently coursing through the veins of our fair hamlet, I'm not going to write a damn thing about jazz in this issue of Soundbites. No, really. Not a word. (Except for the cover story on Ornette Coleman)... Read more

Jazz Hands!

Soundbites: Discover Jazz Festival, Mocean Worker, The Barika Ensemble, Mike Device

Can you hear it? Stop and listen for a second . . . got it? That, my friends, is the sound of silence, which reminds me of a song: “She Thinks My Tractor’s Sexy” by Kenny Chesney. Great tune. Anyway, get your fill now, because starting this Friday, hardly a corner of the Queen City will offer refuge from the onslaught of aural pleasure we like to call the Burlington Discover Jazz Festival.... Big Heavy Survey

Soundbites: The Jazz Guys, The Benders

As the adage goes, “Opinions are like assholes, everybody’s got one.” Because there are opinions on virtually every subject under the sun, it can be a daunting task to sift through the cacophony of talking heads and raving lunatics to filter out the good from the bad. But that’s exactly what Jim Lockridge and his Big Heavy World crew are attempting to do, and they need our help.... Read more

Sirch Party

Soundbites: Austin Sirch, Nightbirds

In this edition of “Soundbites” I’d like to take a few moments to discuss some of the ins and outs of band promotion, specifically with regard to getting some ink in the esteemed pages of Seven Days.

Rule #1: Never, ever drop your CD off at 8:30 on a Monday morning, hoping to have it reviewed in that Wednesday’s paper.... Read more

Come Together

Soundbites: DJ A-Dog, Lettuce

Early last Thursday morning, fire consumed an apartment building at 144 North Union Street in Burlington. Fortunately, all of the building’s nine residents were able to escape unharmed. But the house and virtually everything inside it was a total loss.... Read more

Sound Waves

Soundbites: Magafaun, Trouble vs. Glue

It’s been a while since we’ve heard from experimental music guru Greg Davis. It seems he’s been quite the busy, buzzing bee lately, recording, producing and touring with or for an array of artists and labels as varied as the man’s music itself.... Read more
