Vermont Native Brings Comic Character Home

State of the Arts

When Brian Wood was finishing up Local, a comic-book series featuring a young female protagonist and her adventures around the country, he couldn’t help but include something about his home state in the final issue.

Wood, born and raised in Essex Junction, currently resides in Brooklyn, New York. There he writes comic books and graphic novels, some of the violent, action-packed variety and others focusing on character development. The 12-part series Local, illustrated in dramatic black-and-white by his friend Ryan Kelly, is one of the latter.... Read more

The Dark Knight premiered in Montpelier Saturday, days before its general release.

We have Vermont's own Dark Knight to thank for this rare event - US Senator Patrick Leahy who has a cameo in the film (watch clip).

Senate’s Dark Knight Talks to Young Comics Artists

By now, everyone in Vermont must know that caped-crusader fan Sen. Patrick Leahy pops up in the latest Batman movie, The Dark Knight. On June 25, the Associated Press reported that Leahy orchestrated a Montpelier premiere of the movie six days before its official opening as a benefit for the Kellogg-Hubbard Library. Two Saturday, July 12, screenings at the Capitol Theater will be preceded by a 5:30 p.m. reception at the Capitol Plaza Hotel featuring the senator and Barry Meyer, CEO of Warner Brothers, which is distributing the $180 million film....
