They’ve Got Game

With Ann DeMarle’s popular video game courses, Champlain College levels up

On a recent Wednesday evening, four students are giving a Power Point presentation in a basement computer lab at Champlain College. On the pull-down screen hovers the cartoon figure of a kid who looks like Dennis the Menace’s slower cousin, with a propeller hat and a crooked grin.

“Our game,” a male student says, “involves Bobby here getting trapped in this crazy world by demons and trying to find his way home.”... Read more

Good to the Last Byte

Gamers who whip up virtual vittles explain the appeal

Christopher Coccaro, a 19-year-old Champlain College student sporting shaggy, shoulder-length hair and a flannel shirt, is throwing together some pork and vegetable soup. First he rapidly chops and slices a few ingredients, including a green onion, carrot and radish. He tosses the veggies into a sizzling pan and stirs them regularly to ensure they don't burn. Then he adds them to some liquid in a pot, drops in the pork and adjusts the temperature. The whole process takes around 4 minutes, but when he's done, there's no steaming bowl of soup to enjoy.... It’s the little things that count.

In a year when we’ve been “BioShock”-ed, heard the “Call of Duty,” unpacked “The Orange Box” and gone round and round with “Halo,” the Nintendo DS has quietly remained a bastion of unusual diversions. When you’re in the mood for something completely different, the DS always seems to have what you need.

Where else can you pretend to own a John Deere tractor, learn and perform magic tricks, take a crack at cooking or win a trial as a defense attorney?... Read more

The Good War

It’s a dirty job, but someone’s got to do it.

In a world filled with political unrest and tragic violence, it almost seems too much to glorify war. Then again, as the “Call of Duty” series has always argued, sometimes the road to peace is littered with shell casings.... Read more

Something’s not right here.

Gamers weaned on the rudimentary 3-D of the “Myst” worlds and raised to expect the sophisticated realism of “Far Cry” may wonder about the new games “Super Mario Galaxy” and “Portal.”

After years of pretending to race cars, toss pro balls and kill aliens, game developers have started to get weird. Both “Galaxy” and “Portal” get back to an older gaming tradition by providing whacked-out fun that treads lightly where the rules of physics should apply.... Read more

Video games want out of the basement and teenage boys’ bedrooms.

New games for the Wii, Play-Station 2 and Xbox 360 lead the way up the stairs and right onto the flat screen in the family room.
